Uasin Gishu County has unveiled the Eldoret City Solar-Powered Street Lighting Project, a landmark $23 million Public-Private Partnership aimed at transforming Eldoret into a smart, safe, and energy-efficient city. The 15-year project will deliver a 3 MWp solar plant with 10 MWh storage, a 200 km underground distribution and fiber network, and 20,000 adaptive LED streetlights with CCTV and smart controls. The initiative is expected to cut energy costs by 50%, boost security, extend business hours, and reduce carbon emissions in line with Kenya’s climate commitments. Speaking during public forums, county leaders emphasized the project’s role in modern infrastructure, safety, and sustainability. Dr. Silas Letting, Uasin Gishu County Director of Energy, ICReCC Editorial Board Member, and Conference Organizer, described the initiative as a model that blends renewable energy, ICT, and urban planning, setting a benchmark for other counties. The project, to be implemented with Rayuton Seko Energy Ltd. (Kenya–Czech Republic), is now awaiting County Assembly approval for rollout.
